Firesource offers a range of features designed to provide users with up-to-date and reliable information about fire incidents.
One of the key features is the live fire feed, which is available both on a map and in a scrollable menu. This allows users to easily access information about local and national fire incidents, including news updates and reports.
Another valuable feature is the ability to view real-time fire perimeters. Users can access all fire perimeters at once, and obtain detailed information about the fire's growth and progress, including acreage, containment, personnel, fire cause, and fire behavior.
Furthermore, Firesource allows users to report nearby fires instantly. By pressing the + button, users can inform other app users about a nearby fire by taking a picture of it and submitting it as part of the report.
In addition to fire incidents, Firesource also provides information about air quality. Users can see the effects of recent fires by viewing real-time air quality measurements across the country.
Lastly, Firesource offers satellite fire detections, which indicate new fires and provide valuable insights into how current fires are spreading. This feature utilizes thermal hotspot detections collected from NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS).
Firesource retrieves wildfire incident data from various sources. InciWeb is one such source, which collects wildfire incident data from multiple agencies across the United States. Firesource presents this data in real time, providing the fire's location and detailed status.
Perimeter data, on the other hand, is provided by the Wildland Fire Interagency Geospatial Services (WFIGS) Group and hosted in the National Interagency Fire Center ArcGIS Online Organization (The NIFC Org). Firesource displays fire perimeters and their progress in the 'National Fires' tab of the menu, with regular updates.
User-reported fires play a vital role in Firesource, enabling app users to report fires and immediately inform others. To ensure the validity of fire reports, users must take a photo of the fire using the app and cannot select a picture from their Camera Roll. This feature adds an extra layer of reliability to the reported information.
Air quality measurements in Firesource are collected from AirNow.gov, which uses the Air Quality Index (AQI) to provide national air quality data. These measurements are color-coded to indicate health concerns related to PM2.5 pollutants.
Firesource is not affiliated with any government agencies and is only available for iPhone and iPad users in the United States, Canada, and Australia.
